New Hampshire Poet Showcase
From NH Poet Laureate, Pat Fargnoli

At my request, The NH Arts Council is providing me with a link to the poet laureate page on their website in order that I may showcase poems by a number of New Hampshire Poets. The poets will be by my invitation only, but I plan to include both the famous and the less famous ....those who are seriously working at poetry craft from many areas of the state. A different poet and poem will be presented every 2 weeks.

Featured Poet: Todd Hearon, Exeter

Todd Hearon Todd Hearon's recent work appears in AGNI, Literary Imagination, Poetry, Poetry London, Ploughshares, Salamander and Slate. He is the recipient of a 2007 PEN New England Discovery Award and the 2007 Friends of Literature Prize from Poetry magazine.

Of his showcase poem, Todd writes:

The poem ("Covenant") began with an image, the ring, arising from a compost of memories -- times in Texas involving sheds and diamondback rattlers; involving my wife, too, in the time that we were thinking of starting a family; involving skins and skeins of lost innocence -- or what passed for innocence.

Covenant

This ring, made from the vertebra and rib
Of the diamondback I found beneath the shed
Coiled upon itself and ages dead
(The rattle hung above the empty crib),
Is all the remnant of its brilliant skins.

Wear it in memory of our innocence

"Covenant was first published in Agni
