2017 Governor's Arts Awards
Creative Communities
Award Recipient: City of Nashua
In just three short years, the city of Nashua has revamped its arts landscape to become one of New Hampshire’s premier destinations for the arts. It is home to Symphony NH for great classical music; a thriving night-life music scene including the Riverwalk Café and Music Bar; award-winning theater from Peacock Players, Actorsingers, and the Nashua Theatre Guild; numerous art galleries and studios including the Picker Collaborative Artists and the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium. The city has established art festivals like ArtWalk and the Greeley Park Art Show, along with the new Downtown Arts Fest, NuMuse Festival and New England Roots Festival. The city understands that a visible, active arts community and a strong creative economy contribute to the growth of the city and make it a place where people want to stay, work, play and visit. Through the Nashua Arts Commission, the city has allocated more than $100,000 in competitive grants and workshops for Nashua’s nonprofit arts organizations. In conjunction with the Arts Commission, the city now has its first Arts and Culture Plan. Nashua has more than 30 sculptures across the city, commissioned by the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium, an all-volunteer committee and the only one of its kind in the country.
