Accidental Drowning, West side of Bear Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, Meredith NH - Updated

At approximately 7:07 pm, Marine Patrol was notified of a water rescue in the waters off Bear Island in the Town of Meredith. An island resident was swimming near shore when a family member observed him struggling. Nearby neighbors were alerted to the emergency and retrieved him from the water. Once on the shore, CPR was performed on the victim.

Upon arrival at the scene, Marine Patrol Supervisor David Jones along with members of the Meredith Fire Department continued to render treatment. The victim, a 72 year old male, died at the scene.

The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The victim was identified as John R. Lawhon, age 72, of London England. He was a seasonal resident of Bear Island, Meredith, NH.
