Motor Vehicle Crash, Route 16, Rochester

On Thursday, January 16, 2020, at approximately 1:06 p.m., Troopers assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Troop- A Barracks responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Route 16 northbound at the Rochester tollbooth. Upon arrival, Troopers encountered Unit #1, a 2014 Subaru Impreza on its side on the north side of the tollbooth. The driver of Unit #1, Ronald Theriault, age 65 of North Conway, New Hampshire, was trapped inside the vehicle and required extrication by Rochester Fire and Rescue personnel.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Unit #1 was traveling northbound on Route 16 in lane #2 of the Rochester toll plaza. For reasons that remain under investigation, Mr. Theriault attempted to quickly change from lane #2 to lane #3 and subsequently drove head on into the concrete barrier of the unmanned tollbooth separating lanes #2 and #3. Unit 1 went airborne, traveled over the top of the unmanned booth, and struck a 2019 Chevy van being driven by Dana Joy, age 40, of Barrington, New Hampshire. After striking the van Unit #1 came to a final rest in lane #3, on its side facing south, on the north side of the tollbooth.

Mr. Theriault was transported by Rochester Ambulance to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
One lane of the Rochester toll plaza remained open in both directions while this crash was investigated and the vehicle was removed from the roadway. It is anticipated that lanes #1 and #3 northbound will remain open, while lane #2 northbound will remain closed for repairs to the structure. All southbound lanes are open at this time.

The New Hampshire State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Rochester Fire Department and the NH Department of Transportation.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Trooper Daniel Peete, New Hampshire State Police, Troop-A, at (603)223-8490 or
