Drowning on the Merrimack River, Concord

On Thursday, June 13, 2019 at approximately 7:00 AM, New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol received information from 9-1-1 regarding two kayakers whose vessels began to take on water in the area of the Sewalls Falls boat ramp on the Merrimack River in Concord. The two occupants, who were brothers, got out of the kayaks as they began to sink. They attempted to swim with the current towards the western shoreline. The older brother, identified as Sean Donahue, age 24 of Merrimack, NH, swam to a rock approximately 20 feet from shore. The victim, identified as Alec Bronchuk, age 20 of Merrimack, NH was last seen also attempting to swim to shore. After Mr. Donahue got himself to safety, he walked the shoreline in an attempt to find his brother. After unsuccessfully searching the nearby area, he found an unrelated person who called 9-1-1 for help.

Emergency responders arrived a short time later and began a search. At approximately 2:45 PM on Friday, June 14, 2019, Mr. Bronchuk was recovered 1/3 mile downriver from where he was last seen and approximately 30 yards from shore.

Responding agencies included New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol, New Hampshire Fish and Game, Concord Police Department, Concord Fire/Rescue

The cause of the accident is under investigation. There were no personal floatation devices aboard the vessels. New Hampshire State Police-Marine Patrol and New Hampshire Fish and Game reminds all boaters that water temperatures are still cold and State law requires each boater to have a wearable life jacket with them whenever they are underway. Children ages 12 years old and younger must also wear a life jacket while underway on the public waters.
