Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash, Route 101, Candia, NH

On Wednesday, May 01, 2019 at approximately 1:15am, Troopers from the State Police Troop A Barracks were requested to respond to a single motor vehicle collision on Route 101 eastbound in the Town of Candia, New Hampshire. Upon their arrival a single vehicle was found off the right hand side of the roadway in the tree line. The vehicle was identified as a Kia Forte Sedan.

Based upon the initial investigation, the Kia Forte was traveling eastbound when it lost control and veered off the roadway to the right, drove down an embankment and then crashed head on into a group of trees. The operator of the Kia was identified as Christopher Wadleigh, age 27, of Hampton, NH. Wadleigh sustained bodily injuries and was taken to Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH. The passenger of the Kia Forte was identified as Ashley Shunk, age 21, of Dover, NH. Shunk sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. Due to the seriousness of the crash, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.) Unit responded.

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.) Unit was assisted on scene by Troopers from the Troop A Barracks, Candia Police Department, Candia Fire/EMS and NH Department of Transportation. Due to the collision, Route 101 eastbound from Exit 2 up to Exit 3 was closed for approximately 4 hours.

At this time it appears that speed was a factor in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation.
