Motor Vehicle Accident, Route 111 at Range Road, Windham

On Friday, February 8th, 2019 at approximately 4:30 p.m., the New Hampshire State Police-Troop B received a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a Windham Police Officer at the intersection of Route 111 and Range Road in Windham, NH.

Preliminary investigation shows that the operator of the motor vehicle, 48 year old Sean Norton of Salem, New Hampshire, struck Officer Van Hirtum of the Windham Police Department while Officer Van Hirtum was out of his cruiser directing traffic at the intersection. While on scene responding Troopers were advised that the traffic signals at the intersection were not functioning properly at the time of the collision due to a power outage. It was learned Officer Van Hirtum had responded to the intersection to direct traffic and while he was doing so, Officer Van Hirtum was struck by Norton's vehicle as Norton attempted to make a left hand turn onto range road from Route 111 west.

Officer Van Hirtum was transported from the scene to Southern NH Medical Center in Nashua, for treatment.

Circumstances surrounding this event are still under investigation although the sun glare as well as the malfunctioning traffic signals are believed to be contributing factors.

This accident is being investigated by Trooper John Tyo of the New Hampshire State Police-Troop B. Anyone that may have further information related to this accident is asked to contact Trooper John Tyo at 603-223-4381 or by email at
