On November 14, 2018, at approximately 2:10 pm, Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police Troop B Barracks, along with the Manchester Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on I-93 North, just south of the Route 293 split.

An accident investigation revealed that 35-year-old Ward Burke, from Bedford, NH, was operating a 1995 Volvo 850 station-wagon northbound when he lost control of his vehicle and drifted off the right side of the roadway into an active construction zone. Ward traveled through the work zone before impacting two construction vehicles and a pedestrian worker standing in the vicinity.

Brian Sandall, 48-years-old of Hudson, New Hampshire and 42-year-old Ray LaForest, of Nashua, NH, were each operating street sweepers inside the construction area when their vehicles were impacted by Ward. They were not injured in the crash. Tyler Smith, age 27, of Raymond, NH, was struck while standing next to the street sweepers and suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Ward was entrapped inside his vehicle and had to be extricated by Manchester Fire personnel. Ward also received serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Both Ward and Smith were transported to the Elliott Hospital for their injuries.

As a result of the crash, the right hand travel lane in this area was shut down for approximately 45 minutes to aid in the clean-up process. Ward was arrested and charged with Reckless Conduct RSA 631:3 and Operating After Revocation 263:64. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Trooper Eric Torrens at
