Motor Vehicle Fatality, Interstate 93, Canterbury

On Monday, November 12, 2018 at approximately 4:35 p.m., New Hampshire State Police – Troop D was notified of a single motor vehicle crash on Interstate 93 southbound in the area of mile marker 50.6 in Canterbury, NH. They were informed that a vehicle, later identified as a 1999 Dodge Durango, was traveling southbound when, for an unknown reason, it veered off the road, travelled down the embankment and struck a large tree. The crash involved multiple occupants with serious injuries. Upon their arrival, State Police identified 3 occupants in the vehicle. They were informed that a female front seat passenger was pronounced deceased on scene. She was later identified as Nichole Dempsey, age 43 of Plymouth, NH. A rear passenger, identified as Robert Ayer, age 37of Concord, NH was transported to Concord Hospital with serious injuries. The operator of the vehicle, identified as James Deveau, age 50 of Epping, NH was transported to Concord Hospital with serious injuries. He was eventually arrested at the hospital and charged with Felony Aggravated Driving under the Influence of Drugs and Felony Operating After Suspension. Due to the seriousness of the crash Troop D requested the assistance of the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, (C.A.R.) to handle the investigation.

Based upon the initial on-scene investigation, the Dodge Durango drifted off the roadway while traveling southbound and struck a large tree before coming to rest, off the roadway in the median at the tree line. The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.) Unit was assisted on scene by members of Troop D as well as the Canterbury Fire and Rescue, Northfield-Tilton Fire and Rescue, Penacook Fire and NH DOT. Due to the collision, Interstate 93 southbound was restricted to one lane for approximately 4 hours while the investigation was conducted.
