Fatal Boating Accident, Lake Winnipesaukee, Alton

On Friday, August 24, 2018 at approximately 10:08 AM, New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a boating accident in the area of Little Mark Island on Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton, NH.

Responding officers arrived and upon initial investigation found the boat tied to the dock. It is believed that a 23' Cobalt inboard/outboard powerboat was being operated by Edmond Macri, age 74, of Simsbury, CT. He was preparing to leave the dock and had five adults and three children also aboard. The operator made an abrupt maneuver, causing a passenger to fall into the water. The vessel struck the victim, identified as William Rowan, age 35, of Wilmington, NC. Mr. Rowan was brought to shore where he was pronounced deceased.

Responding agencies included the Alton Police and Fire Departments, New Hampshire Fish and Game, and New Hampshire State Police.

At this time it appears that operator error may have been a contributing factor in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation. Anyone who has further information related to this accident or who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Sgt. Dave Ouellette at 603-227-2111 or by email at
