Life Saving Event, New Hampshire Hospital

On Sunday May 13, 2018 at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon, an unknown male visitor entered the reception area in the lobby of New Hampshire Hospital to visit someone. While checking in with reception, the subject suddenly collapsed in an apparent seizure. Within moments, Campus Police Officer Roy Pywell and Security Officer Paul Nemcovich were assisting the subject as he continued to seize. Emergency calls to Concord Fire Department were made by the Campus Police Dispatch at that time. During the incident, the subject stopped breathing. Officer Pywell immediately recognized the subject had stopped breathing and began CPR compressions. After a few chest compressions, the subject began to breathe on his own and regained consciousness. Shortly thereafter, New Hampshire Hospital medical staff and Concord EMS arrived. The subject was transported to Concord Hospital by Concord Fire Department and is in unknown condition.

Campus Police Officer Pywell has received training in and has administered extensive combat first aid in his 22 years as an Infantryman with the Royal Regiment of Scotland within the British Army, from where he retired prior to joining the Campus Police Unit in December of 2015. He graduated from the 169th New Hampshire Full-Time Police Recruit Academy in Concord.

The State Police Campus Unit is a relatively obscure police force within the NH State Police, comprised of ten full-time sworn police officers, 4 full-time dispatchers and 5 civilian security staff. The Unit's primary responsibility is to provide police services for the Hugh Gallen State Office Complex, a 120 acre campus in Concord, including state offices and units, and the New Hampshire Hospital. The campus population is roughly 4,500 on any given business day and the Campus Police Unit logs approximately 17,000 calls a year.
