Motor Vehicle Collision, Stoddard

On Thursday May 03, 2018 at approximately 1230 hours, Troopers from New Hampshire State Police-Troop C and Troop G along with members from the Stoddard Fire Department, Keene Fire Department, Stoddard and Nelson Police Departments, and the Cheshire County Sherriff's Office, responded to Route 9 in the Town of Stoddard for a reported Jacked-Knife Tractor Trailer collision with fuel spillage from the tractor's fuel tank(s).

The investigation revealed that James A. Williams, age 73, Boiling Springs, SC, was operating a 2007 Freightliner Tractor with an Attached Hyundai Trailer (Unloaded) westbound on Route 9 when he lost control of the vehicle striking the guardrail off the westbound lane causing the trailer to jackknife.

After impact, the TT-Unit came to rest on the westbound shoulder with the tractor portion facing in a westerly direction and the trailer portion facing in a southeast direction.

The Operator was uninjured as a result of the collision. The fuel tank(s) ruptured during the collision causing the fuel to spill out onto the roadway, however, the spillage was able to be contained. This spillage caused the closure of Route 9 in Stoddard for approximately 2.5 hours.

Currently this section of roadway has loose gravel over it to absorb the spillage. It is safe to travel on this portion of the roadway but motorists should maintain a safe and reduced speed in the area until the gravel can be cleaned up and removed. NH DOT has posted sign boards in the area.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Anybody with information pertaining to this investigation is urged to call Tpr. Rich Camacho or Tr. James Phillips at 603-358-3333.
