Interstate closure, Portsmouth

photo of the crash on exit #3 northbound and southbound on Interstate 95

On Thursday, March 8, 2018, at approximately 7:50 a.m., Troopers from the NH State Police, Troop-A responded to the area of exit #3 northbound and southbound on Interstate 95 in the City of Portsmouth for a report of power and cable lines down across the interstate. A utility pole on the southbound side of the roadway snapped, causing the lines to fall across the interstate in both directions. Both the northbound and southbound sides of Interstate 95 were closed for approximately 3 hours. Traffic was safely rerouted around the obstruction as crews worked to remove the downed lines.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. It appears the weight of the snow on the lines may have caused the damage to the utility pole. However, all aspects of this incident are being investigated.

The NH State Police were assisted by the Portsmouth Police Department, the Portsmouth Fire Department, the Newington Police Department, the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, Eversource Energy, Comcast Corp, and Fair Point Communications. No further information is available at this time.
