Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident, Interstate 93 North, Windham

On Saturday, December 23, 2017, at approximately 6:45 PM, Tr. E. Torrens of the New Hampshire State Police Troop B barracks in Bedford, NH responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 93 north in Windham south of exit 3. It had been reported that a vehicle had been struck by a Tractor Trailer unit while it was stopped on the roadway. Tr. E. Torrens along with Windham and Derry Fire located a 2004 Volvo S40 in the right travel lane with heavy rear end damage and also located the Tractor Trailer unit approximately 100 feet down the embankment in a retention pond. The operator of the Volvo was identified as: Ashley St. Onge, 19 years old, Methuen MA.

St. Onge was located on the embankment on the east side of the interstate and recovered by Tr. Torrens along with Windham and Derry Fire and EMS. Also located on the embankment was a passenger in the Volvo that was identified as: Nicholas Hadley, 19 years old, Derry NH.

A third passenger in the Volvo was located inside the vehicle and identified as: Haley Wizboski, 18 years old, Methuen MA.

St. Onge was rushed to the Parkland Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries. Hadley was also taken to the Parkland Medical Center with life threatening injuries and subsequently transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Wizboski was transported to the Parkland Medical Center with minor injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates St. Onge pulled over to the side of the road when she became frightened of the icy road conditions. As she switched positions with Hadley to allow him to drive, the Tractor Trailer unit came through and was unable to stop due to the slippery road conditions. The TT unit subsequently crashed into the Volvo with St. Onge and Hadley still outside the vehicle. All aspects of the crash remain under investigation. The right lanes of I-93 were closed for approximately 3 hours while Troopers worked on the scene.

Assisting New Hampshire Troopers from Troop B were members of the Windham Fire Department, the Derry Fire Department and EMS.

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is encouraged to contact Tr. E. Torrens at the New Hampshire State Police – Troop B Barracks at 603-223-4381.
