CMV / DOT Crash, Route 16, Ossipee

On Dec 22, 2017, at approximately 12:30 pm, a collision between a New Hampshire DOT Plow Truck and a Tractor Trailer occurred on Route 16 in Ossipee, just north of the intersection of Brown Ridge Road and Route 16.

The New Hampshire DOT plow truck, driven by Eugene Doe, 51 of Freedom NH, was actively engaged in plowing snow northbound on Route 16 in the high speed lane. The tractor-trailer vehicle, owned by AXL Inc., Greenland, NH, driven by Michel Sawyer, 55 of Wakefield, NH, was following behind the plow truck. Sawyer moved into the right (slow) lane and passed the DOT plow truck. While passing the plow truck, the tractor trailer vehicle collided with the right side wing plow, which caused the DOT plow truck to spin out of control. The DOT plow truck spun completely around two times, crossed into and across the southbound lanes of travel and came to rest in the snowbank on the southbound shoulder of Route 16.

The DOT plow truck received damage to the right side wing plow and the tractor-trailer vehicle incurred minor damage. There were no injuries reported from the driver of the DOT plow truck or the driver of the tractor-trailer vehicle. The DOT plow truck was recovered by NH DOT personnel. The driver of the tractor-trailer vehicle was cited for 2 Motor Carrier Violations.

The New Hampshire State Police can't emphasize enough the importance of being careful when operating around NH DOT trucks engaged in plowing our roadways. These DOT plow truck drivers do an important job that requires absolute concentration on the task at hand. Whenever you come upon any DOT vehicle engaged in plowing our roadways, slow your speed down, stay well enough away from the plow truck and absolutely do not attempt to pass.

Other emergency professionals supporting the efforts at this collision investigation included NH DOT, Ossipee Police Department, Carroll County Sheriff's Department and Ossipee Fire Department.
