photo showing damage both the toyta crolla and honda fit front ends

On Friday, November 10, 2017 at approximately 6:35 p.m., the Hancock Police Department was notified of a serious motor vehicle collision on Route 202 in the area of Cavender Road in Hancock. Hancock Police along with Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene and found two vehicles involved in the middle of Route 202. Due to the seriousness of the crash, they requested the assistance of the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit. One of the vehicles involved was identified as a 2003 Toyota Corolla sedan operated by Joseph MAYS, age 29, of Keene, New Hampshire. He sustained life threatening injuries in the collision and was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon by Med-Flight. He was eventually arrested at the hospital and charged with felony aggravated driving while under the influence. The other vehicle involved was identified as a 2012 Honda Fit hatchback and was operated by Merissa ALDRICH, age 33, of Peterborough, New Hampshire. She also sustained life threatening injuries in the collision and was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon by Med-Flight. There was also a 3 year old female child in a safety seat secured in the rear of the Honda Fit. She was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough then later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Based upon the initial on-scene investigation, it appears that the Honda Fit was traveling westbound on Route 202. At the same time the Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound on Route 202. In the area just west of Cavender Road the Toyota Corolla crossed over into the westbound lane and struck the Honda Fit in a head on fashion crash.

At the request of the initial responding units, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit responded to the scene. The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit was assisted on scene by members of the Hancock Police Department, the Hancock Fire and Rescue Department, the Greenfield Police Department and the Bennington Police Department. Due to the collision, Route 202 in this area was closed for approximately 4 hours.

At this time it appears that alcohol may have been factors in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation. Anyone that may have further information related to this collision, or who witnessed this collsion, are encouraged to contact Trooper First Class Michael Pelletier at 603-223-8699 or by email at michael.pelletier@dos.nh.gov.
