Reckless Driving Arrest, I-95, Greenland

At approximately 0830 hours on November 4th, 2017, Trooper Scott Garton, of the New Hampshire State Police Special Enforcement Unit was monitoring traffic from the State Police aircraft on I-95 Southbound in the Town of Greenland. Tr. Garton observed a vehicle traveling at an extremely high rate of speed and clocked it at 109 MPH in the posted 65MPH speed zone. Tr. Garton radioed to Troopers on the ground. The vehicle a 2005 Porsche Boxster passed by the ground trooper's location. It was subsequently stopped and the operator was identified as Clifford Bates, age 53, Concord, MA.

TFC Jay LaPointe made contact with Bates. When asked why he was traveling at that speed, Bates stated that he thought he was traveling 68mph and was just trying to get home. TFC LaPointe charged him with Reckless Driving, Operating after suspension and open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Bates is due to appear in the Portsmouth Circuit Court to answer to these charges on December 18, 2017 at 0800.

The NH State Police Special Enforcement Unit regularly interdicts elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors. Its members patrol across the state often utilizing the State Police aircraft during commuter traffic periods and holiday travel times with the goal of keeping New Hampshire's roadways safe for all residents and visitors.
