Reckless Conduct, Reney Memorial Forest Hiking Trail, Grantham

On Sunday October 15, 2017 Trooper McLaughlin was approached by a concerned citizen in the Town of Grantham, NH. This individual advised Trooper McLaughlin that at approximately 1015 hours he heard an estimated 15 gun shots fired along the loop hiking trail at the Donas J. & Margaret Reney Memorial Forest which is located along Route 10 / Main Street in the Town of Grantham. This is a popular hiking spot for locals and visitors especially at this time of year.

The reporting party being familiar with the hiking trails and upon seeing several vehicles parked in the parking area realized that there were hikers on the trails. Being concerned about the dangerousness of shooting in that area, the reporting party entered the parking area. While the shots were still being fired, this witness made contact with two female hikers with dogs who were exiting the northern trail and returning to their vehicles in the parking area. A male hiker also exited the trail behind the females. Due to the commotion and shouting from the parking area, the shooters stopped firing and returned to their vehicle which had been parked adjacent to the hiker's vehicles. The trails are clearly marked as hiking trails and a large sign with map is erected at the trail head. The concerned citizen had a brief interaction with the two male subjects who left the area in a silver SUV with an unknown Massachusetts registration.

Based upon this information, Troopers from Troop – C and Grantham Police issued a BOL (Be on the lookout) to surrounding towns in attempt to locate the shooter(s). The initial investigation revealed that the two men with a rifle walked east approximately 100 feet along the southern trail and then approximately 100 feet north where they began firing into a makeshift target.

At this time the investigation is being handled by the State Police Troop - C. Police are interested in identifying and interviewing the hikers who were on the trail at the time of this incident. Anyone that may have further information related to this incident is encouraged to please contact Trooper Michael McLaughlin at (603) 419-0130 or by email at
