Fatal motor vehicle crash, NH route 38 Pelham, NH

On Friday September 29, 2017 at approximately 2:45 pm a serious motor vehicle crash occurred on NH Route 38 in the Town of Pelham, NH. The crash involved two vehicles, a 2015 Ford F550 Dump Truck, operated by Patrick D'Alba, age 39 of Pelham and a Motor-Driven Schwinn Cycle, operated by Paul Nieves, age 59 of Lowell, MA. Initial investigation appears to show that the F550 Ford Dump Truck was traveling southbound on Route 38 and was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Jericho Road and for reasons yet undetermined failed to observe the Motor-Driven Cycle which was traveling northbound in the breakdown lane. The cycle subsequently struck the right rear of the F550 Ford Dump Truck.

The operator of the cycle sustained serious, life threatening injuries and was transported via ground ambulance to Lowell General Hospital in Lowell Massachusetts where he succumbs to his injuries. The operator of the F550 Ford sustained no injuries and is cooperating with the investigation.

At the request of the initial responding units, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.) Unit responded to the scene. At this time the collision remains under investigation. It does not appear that impairment was a factor in the collision, however all aspects are still under investigation, including speed and/or distraction. As a result of the collision Route 38 in the area of Jericho Road was closed for several hours while the investigation took place. The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.) Unit was assisted on scene by members of New Hampshire State Police Troop G, the Pelham Police Department and the Pelham Fire and Rescue Department.

Any witnesses are encouraged to contact Trooper Daniel Quartulli at 603-223-8993 or preferably at daniel.quartulli@dos.nh.gov.
