Boating Accident, Winter Harbor, Lake Winnipesaukee

On September 3, 2017 at approximately 5:55 PM, Marine Patrol responded to a boat accident in Winter Harbor, on Lake Winnipesaukee in the town of Wolfeboro. The operator and his passenger were in a 13' Boston Whaler and were ejected from the vessel. The boat continued to circle, unoccupied for approximately 20 minutes before it came to rest. The operator of the vessel was identified as Stephen Young, age 64, of Cumberland, RI.

Mr. Young was treading water for several minutes while trying to find his passenger. He was unable to locate him in the choppy water and ultimately swam to shore to get help.

The passenger on the vessel was a seven year old male who spent significant time in the water before he swam to shore to get help. He was wearing a lifejacket. He was released to his parents with no injuries.

The weather conditions were poor at the time of the accident due to low visibility and rough water conditions.

Marine Patrol would like to remind all boaters on the importance of lifejackets and use of an engine cut-off switch if the vessel is equipped with one.

Assisting agencies: Tuftonboro Fire, Wolfeboro Fire, Wolfeboro PD.

Marine Patrol is investigating the accident. Anyone who has further information related to this accident or who witnessed it is encouraged to contact Officer Nicholas Boisvert at (603) 293-2037 ext. 0.
