On August 31 2017, at approximately 0050 hours, Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police-Troop A barracks responded to a report of a multi-car motor vehicle accident on Route 101 eastbound in the town of Auburn, NH.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1998 Volkswagon Beetle sedan, being driven by Madgalie Wakefield, age 58, of Candia, NH, had been traveling eastbound on Route 101 when she struck a moose that had been standing in the middle of the eastbound travel lanes. Wakefield was transported to the Elliot Hospital for minor injuries. After the moose was struck, the animal went down and remained in the left travel lane. Eli Corson, age 22, of Exeter, NH, was traveling in a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck behind Wakefield's vehicle. His vehicle also struck the moose lying in the roadway. Corson sustained no injuries and proceeded to pull over to the right side of the roadway. Wakefield's vehicle came to a final rest in the center median. Marcos Freitas, age 62, of Manchester, NH, driving a 2008 Honda Civic, came upon the accident scene and attempted to avoid the moose in the left travel lane. His vehicle subsequently collided with Corson's vehicle and the guardrail on the right side of the roadway. Freitas sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Elliot Hospital for evaluation. Christopher Aikens, age 33, of Antrim, NH , driving a 2015 Freightliner tractor trailer had been traveling behind Freitas. His vehicle also struck the moose in the left travel lane. Aikens sustained no injuries in the collision.

Route 101 eastbound was closed for approximately 1 hour as Troopers investigated the accident and for removal of the four vehicles involved in the collision, along with the animal.

Assisting the New Hampshire State Police at the scene was the Auburn Police Department, Candia Police Department, Auburn Fire Department, Candia Fire Department and NH DOT.
