Motor Vehicle Accident/Highway Closure, Milton

On Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at approximately 3:45 p.m., Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police-Troop A barracks responded to a report of a head-on motor vehicle accident on Route 16 in the Town of Milton, NH.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Chevy Silverado, being driven by Dennis Hartigan, age 60, of Saugus, MA, was traveling southbound on Route 16. For reasons that are still under investigation, Hartigan lost control of his vehicle and entered the northbound lane of travel. His vehicle struck a 2006 Hyundai Tucson being driven by James Guptill, age 82, of East Wakefield, NH.

Hartigan and Guptill sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to the Frisbie Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both men were wearing their seatbelts.

The roadway was beginning to form ice in some areas at the time of this accident. Traveling too fast for the existing road conditions on the part of Hartigan appears to be a possible contributing factor. However, all aspects are being investigated.

The right travel lane was closed for approximately 45 minutes and traffic was diverted off of exit #17.

Assisting the New Hampshire State Police at the scene were the Milton Police Department, the Farmington Police Department, the Milton Fire Department, the Rochester Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

This accident remains under investigation by Trooper Eric Call. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident is asked to contact Trooper Call, NH State Police-Troop A at (603) 223-8490.
