At approximately 1120 hours on Saturday February 11, 2017, Trooper First Class Sean Faherty, of the New Hampshire State Police Special Enforcement Unit was on Interstate 93 in the Town of New Hampton responding to a motor vehicle collision. The speeds on the interstate were set by DOT at 45mph due to the snow storm. While responding to the crash, TFC Faherty observed a vehicle traveling at a very high rate of speed catching up from behind. As the vehicle passed TFC Faherty in the left lane it came upon another vehicle and nearly struck it from behind. The operator of the suspect vehicle slammed on his brakes, lost control on the snow covered roadway, careened to the right directly in front of TFC Faherty and struck the snowbank, which sent the vehicle back into the left travel lane. The driver regained control and sped off. The vehicle attained speeds of 98mph. A short distance away, TFC. Faherty was able to catch up to the vehicle due to the slowing traffic ahead caused by the initial motor vehicle collision. TFC. Faherty had his lights and siren activated and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle but it refused and continued traveling northbound speeding away from the crash scene it had been forced to slow down for. The vehicle continued north for another mile and a half before finally coming to a stop ending the menacing driving behavior. During the roadside investigation, TFC. Faherty determined the driver was impaired by alcohol as well as his operating privileges in the State of New Hampshire were suspended. The driver was identified as William G. Mullen, age 58, Peabody, MA.

Mullen is being charged with the following: Disobeying a Police Officer, Driving While Intoxicated – Subsequent Offense, Reckless Operation, Operating after Suspension and Open Container. Mullen is due to appear in the Laconia Circuit Court to answer to this charge on March 9, 2017 at 0830.

The NH State Police Special Enforcement Unit regularly interdicts elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors. Its members patrol across the state often utilizing the State Police aircraft during commuter traffic periods and holiday travel times with the goal of keeping New Hampshire's roadways safe.
