Drowning – Bow Lake , Bow Lake - Strafford

At approximately 1:59 p.m. a 911 call was received by State Police dispatch reporting a kayaker in distress in the water, in the middle of Bow Lake in Strafford, NH.

The 62 year old Strafford, NH female was kayaking when it is believed that the extreme water conditions, including high winds, caused her to capsize. Emergency personnel from nine agencies responded that included three Fire Rescue Boats; despite the victim wearing a life jacket, her body was recovered away from her kayak approximately 2 hours later in the vicinity of Loon Island.

The weather conditions included 20-25 mph wind, with gusts up to 50 MPH, 2½' swells and a water temperature of only 53 degrees. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this drowning.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact Sergeant Dirth at (603) 227-2115.

NHSP - Marine Patrol urges everyone to use an abundance of caution when venturing onto the water. "It's vitally important that people dress for the water temperature and existing conditions, not just the air temperature", says Sergeant Dirth. "Even experienced boaters may encounter an emergency that can unfold in seconds – please take the necessary precautions before entering or being near the water".

Assisting agencies: Strafford Police, Barrington Police, Fish and Game, Strafford Fire Rescue, Barnstead Fire Rescue, Gilmanton Fire Rescue, Northwood Fire Rescue, Barrington Fire Rescue, Rochester Fire Rescue.
