Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash, US Route 202/NH Route 9, Henniker

On Sunday October 9, 2016 at approximately 5:52 PM a motor vehicle crash occurred on US Route 202/NH Route 9 in the Town of Henniker, NH. The crash involved numerous vehicles and resulted in one fatality. Prior to the collision one of the vehicles involved was observed by Tr. Aramus Carabello from the NH State Police Troop C travelling at an excessively high rate of speed on NH Route 9 in the Town of Stoddard, NH. Tr. Carabello attempted to catch up and stop the vehicle, identified as a Toyota Rav4 Sport Utility Vehicle color blue, however almost immediately lost sight of the vehicle due to its speed. NH State Police Troop C notified the Hillsboro Police Department of the reckless operation of the Toyota Rav4 and a short time later the same vehicle was observed by Officer Mark McSweeney of the Hillsboro Police Department. Officer McSweeney observed that the Toyota Rav4 was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour on US Route 202/NH Route 9. Officer McSweeney attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop for the reckless operation however the operator of the Toyota Rav4 failed to stop and attempted to elude Officer McSweeney. Officer McSweeney pursued the vehicle for a short time before terminating the pursuit due to the excessive speed and reckless nature of the vehicles operation. Subsequent jurisdictions, including the Henniker Police Department, the Merrimack County Sheriff's Department, and the New Hampshire State Police Troop D were notified of the Toyota Rav4's reckless operation and failure to stop for the Hillsboro Police.

Shortly after terminating the pursuit multiple E911 calls began being received by the Merrimack County Sheriff's Department regarding a motor vehicle crash on US Route 202/NH Route 9 in Henniker. Around the same time the Hillsboro Police also notified the Merrimack County Sheriff's Department of a motor vehicle crash on US Route 202/NH Route 9 approximately one mile prior to the junction with NH Route 114. It was determined that the crash involved not only the previously mentioned Toyota Rav4 but also a Ford Expedition operated by Lester Darigan, age 45, of Limerick, ME, a Nissan Xterra operated by Tiffany Capen, age 42, of West Brattleboro, VT and also occupied Michael Pratt, age 50, of Vernon, VT , and a Nissan Pathfinder, towing a camper, which was operated by Robert Remley, age 76, of Brockport, NY. As a result of the collision the operator of a Toyota Rav4, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and determined to be deceased on scene. Capen and Pratt both sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Concord Hospital for treatment. The remaining involved individuals reported no or minor injuries and were treated by the Henniker Fire Department.

At the request of the Henniker Police Department, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Preliminary investigation shows that speed was a factor in the collision. All other aspects of the collision including impairment and/or distraction remain under investigation. US Route 202/NH Route 9 was closed in both directions for several hours while the on scene investigation was conducted, the vehicles were removed, and the debris was cleared. The New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit was assisted on scene by the Henniker Police Department, the Henniker Fire Department, the Hillsboro Police Department, the Deering Police Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

At this time the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is encouraged to contact Trooper First Class Thomas Conlon at 603-223-8614 or via email at thomas.conlon@dos.nh.gov.
