Bus Fire: Interstate 93 South, Canterbury

On. Oct. 08 at approximately 17:17 p.m., the New Hampshire State Police responded to the area of Interstate 93 southbound, mile marker 45.6 in the Town of Canterbury, NH for the report of a bus on fire. Troopers found full sized passenger bus on fire, all occupants were evacuated and there were no injuries.

The Canterbury and Northfield Fire Departments responded to the scene, but were delayed because of heavy traffic and drivers not moving. This resulted in the interstate being blocked. Troopers had to respond northbound in the southbound lane clearing traffic so fire tankers could deliver water to the scene.

Once the fire was extinguished one lane of Interstate 93 southbound was opened for traffic until the bus can be removed. Drivers are asked to be patient and should expect traffic congestion southbound while the bus is being removed from the scene.

The bus was transporting high school students home from a sporting event and a replacement bus is en route to pick up students and staff.

The cause of the fire is unknown and Troop D Troopers were assisted by Commercial Enforcement Troopers from Troop G. Canterbury Police also assisted with traffic control.
