Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash, Route 16, Ossipee

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at approximately 4:08 p.m., the Ossipee Police Department was notified of a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of Deer Camp Camping Area on White Mountain Highway, (Route 16). Upon arrival, the Ossipee Police Department determined the collision involved three vehicles in which it was believed the operator of one vehicle had suffered fatal injury. The Ossipee Police Department requested the assistance of the New Hampshire State Police-Troop E in Tamworth, NH and the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, (C.A.R.), Unit.

Preliminary investigation by the C.A.R. Unit indicated that a 2004 Dodge 1500 pickup truck was traveling northbound on Route 16, crossed the center line and struck a 1999 Honda Accord head-on, which was traveling southbound. This caused the Dodge pickup to rollover in the southbound lane. Also traveling southbound was a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup that tried to avoid the Dodge pickup but was unable to and side-swiped it as it was rolling over.

The operator of the Dodge pickup was identified as Jason Nason, age 28 of Ossipee, NH. He was taken to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, NH where he was evaluated and released with only minor injuries. The operator of Honda Accord, identified as, Janet Baumann, age 61, of Ossipee, NH was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger in the Honda Accord was identified as Gary Baumann, age 67, also of Ossipee, NH was transported to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, NH then transferred by Med Flight to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine with serious, life-threatening injuries. The operator of the Ford Ranger identified as Sarah Miller, age 26, of Alton, NH reported no injuries. The passenger in the Ford Ranger identified as Shane Perkins, age 29, of Barnstead, NH, also reported no injuries.

At this time the crash investigation is being handled by the State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction, (C.A.R.), Unit with assistance from the New Hampshire State Police-Troop E and the Ossipee Police Department. Several agencies responded and assisted with the investigation, including but not limited to, the Ossipee Police Department, Ossipee Fire & Rescue Department and the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.

The collision remains under investigation at this time and all factors including speed, distraction, and/or impairment are being considered. No further information will be released at this time and any charges will be determined upon the completion of the investigation.
