Grounding of MV Sophie C Mail Vessel in Lake Winnipesaukee, in the area of Loon Island in Meredith

At 12:16 PM on August 26, 2016, Marine Patrol dispatch received a call from the Captain of the Mount Washington Flagship stating that its sister ship, the Sophie C, a 76-foot-long motor vessel, had run aground in the area of Loon Island in Meredith. The boat was being operated at a very slow speed at the time of the grounding, operating in a normally traveled, navigable channel. The captain of the vessel was Robert Reed, a commercially-licensed operator with the M/S Flagship Corp. There were a total of six persons onboard, including the crew, and all passengers were evacuated and returned to port. There were no injuries. It was determined that the Sophie C was resting on a submerged rock. The vessel was later removed with the assistance of its sister ship, the Doris E, and was operated under its own power back to its hailing port of Center Harbor for further evaluation.

The NH Marine Patrol would like to stress to the boating public that limited snowmelt in the spring combined with lack of rainfall this summer has resulted in lower than usual water levels in the majority of the state's waterbodies. Submerged hazards that are not typically of concern under normal conditions should be taken into consideration when operating a vessel.
