Motor Vehicle Crash / Road Closure

On Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at approximately 0245 hours, Troopers assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Troop A barracks responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Route 16 southbound just north of Exit 1 in Newington, New Hampshire. Upon arrival, Troopers encountered a dark colored SUV in the center of the three lane roadway, facing westbound.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Unit #1, a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban being operated by an unlicensed minor, from Harpswell, Maine, was traveling south on Route 16. For reasons that remain under investigation, Unit #1 left the roadway and drove into the grass on the right or west side of the roadway. After striking the 2.2 mile marker, the driver over-corrected to the left and drove in an easterly direction across the three southbound lanes of Route 16. As Unit #1 crossed the roadway, the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise, and subsequently struck the guardrail that separates the north and southbound lanes of Route 16.

Witnesses to the crash stated that Unit #1 had been traveling at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash.

Both the driver and his minor passenger from Richmond, Maine were transported by Newington Fire / Rescue to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Route 16 was completely shut down just north of Exit #1 for approximately one hour while the crash was investigated and the vehicle and debris were removed from the roadway.

The New Hampshire State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Newington Police Department, the Newington Fire Department and the NH Department of Transportation.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Trooper Michelle Montville, New Hampshire State Police, Troop-A, at (603)223-8490.
