On Tuesday, August 09, 2016, at approximately 0125 hours, troopers assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Troop A barracks responded to a report of a multi- vehicle accident on Route 16 between Exit 17 and Exit 18 in Milton, New Hampshire. Troopers working a construction detail in the area were first to respond to the scene. Upon arrival they encountered three vehicles essentially in the center of the roadway, two of which sustained severe front end damage.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Unit #1, a 2003 Ford Explorer, being operated by Donald Pierce, age 56 of Kingston, New Hampshire, was traveling southbound south of Exit 17, when he entered the construction zone. The traffic pattern in this area required vehicles to utilize one lane for both northbound and southbound traffic which was being controlled by civilian flagging personnel. Troopers in fully marked cruisers with blue emergency lights activated, combined with multiple illuminated sign boards provided early warning to drivers, of the lane shift in this area. At the time of the crash flagging personnel had northbound traffic stopped in the area of mile marker 31.4. As Mr. Pierce traveled southbound through the cone package, and he approached the stopped northbound traffic, his vehicle veered to the left into the stopped northbound traffic, and struck Unit #2 nearly head–on. Unit #2 was identified as a Hyundai Elantra, being operated by Nicholas Poirier, age 19 of Dover, New Hampshire. After striking Unit #2, Mr. Pierce continued a short distance and struck Unit #3 head–on. Unit #3 was identified as a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, being operated by Dominic Albano, age 36 of Lowell, Massachusetts. As a result of the impact, Unit #1 sustained severe front end damage. Unit #2 sustained moderate front end damage and Unit #3 also sustained severe front end damage.

As a result of the crash Nicholas Poirier was transported by Milton Fire-Rescue to the Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. There were no other injuries reported at the scene.

Due to the placement of the vehicles in the roadway, Route 16 was completely shut down at Exit 17 north and south for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated, the vehicles were removed from the roadway, and the construction package was re-established.

Units #1 and #3 were removed from the scene by Crowell's Towing and Repair of Wakefield, New Hampshire, while Unit #2 was removed by Bob's Towing Repair of Rochester, New Hampshire.

The operator of Unit #1, Donald Pierce, was taken into custody and he was charged with DWI. He was tarnsported to the Rochester Police Dpartment for processing and he was released on $2500 PR bail. Mr. Pierce was issued a court date of August 23, 2016 at 0800 in the 7th Circuit Court- Rochester District. Mr. Pierce was then transported to the Strafford County House of Corrections, where he was placed into protective custody.

The New Hampshire State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Milton Police Department, the Milton Fire Department and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
