Motor Vehicle Fatality, Route 113 Westbound, Sandwich

On Monday, August 8, 2016 at approximately 10:40 p.m. Sergeant Joseph Shackford of the New Hampshire State Police Troop E in Tamworth attempted to stop a vehicle for a motor vehicle violation on Route 25 in Tamworth. The vehicle failed to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned onto Route 113 westbound and continued to drive recklessly at a high rate of speed and also extinguishing the vehicle lights at times. This vehicle was evetually identifed as a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta. Shortly after turning onto Route 113 Sergeant Shackford discontinued his attempt to actively stop this vehicle, shutting off his emergency lights. In the area of Foss Flats Road the operator lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and struck a tree on the north side of the road.

The operator suffered life threatening injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was pronounced deceased by Assistant Deputy Medical Examiner Kevin Monte. There were no other occupants in this vehice and there were no other vehicles involved in this event. The operator of this vehicle was eventually identified as Jake Davison, age 19 of Tamworth, New Hampshire. The crash investigation is being handled by the State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Unit (C.A.R. Unit) with assistance from NH State Police Troop E.

Assisting on scene were members of the NH State Police Troop E Barracks, Sandwich Police Department, Moultonborough Police Department, Sandwich and Moultonborough Fire & Rescue, and Stewards Ambulance Service. A portion of Route 113 was closed for several hours while this crash was investigated.
