photo of boat damage

On Friday, August 8th at approximately 10:30 PM a 911 call was received for a serious boating crash on Lake Winnisquam in the City of Laconia, NH.

A 21' Moomba powerboat, being operated by Brian Jackes, age 32 of Belmont, NH was adrift with four occupants on board between Pot Island and Shore Drive when it was struck from the rear by a 24' Fourwinns powerboat being operated by a 15 year old male juvenile and two passengers.

Seconds before impact two of the occupants aboard the Moomba; Mr. Jackes and a 13 year old boy were able to jump overboard into the water escaping injury. The impact caused serious structural damage to the struck Moomba and caused injuries to individuals on both vessels.

A seven year old boy aboard the Moomba sustained facial injuries while the owner of the Fourwinns, Wayne Balcom, age 69 of Nashua, NH sustained serious injuries.

Following the collision life jackets were used when the Moomba began taking on water and capsized putting all four occupants into the water. Fire Rescue personnel were assisted by a good Samaritan that transported first responders to the scene.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash.

Marine Patrol urges all boaters to operate safely and exercise an extra degree of caution when operating during the hours of darkness and to remain vigilant to other boater's navigational lights.

Assisting agencies: Laconia Police, Belmont Police, Laconia Fire Rescue, Meredith Fire Rescue.

The crash remains under investigation; anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact NHSP – Marine Patrol at (603) 293-2037.
