Fatal Boating Accident, Pemigewasset River, New Hampton

At approximately 6:35 p.m., New Hampton Fire/Rescue and the NH State Police-Marine Patrol received notification of a missing boater on the Pemigewasset River in New Hampton. Officials responded to the scene on shore and by boat where an intense search for a 54 year old male who had disappeared below the surface of the water, was conducted.

The missing person was operating a 14' aluminum motorboat with his wife as passenger when one of their four dogs exited the boat in the water. After several unsuccessful attempts to retrieve the dog, the operator went into the water to assist the dog back into the boat.

It is reported that the subject began to struggle and lifejackets were thrown to him but he was not able to get to reach them. He was seen with the dog on his chest before he slipped below the surface.

Passing kayakers assisted the remaining occupant of the boat to shore where they were met by the New Hampton Fire Dept. The dog was also retrieved from shore.

Search efforts were overseen by the New Hampton Fire Department until officials from the NH Fish and Game arrived on scene. Efforts were suspended due to darkness. Fish and Game Divers will be on scene tomorrow along with Marine Patrol who continues to investigate the accident.

Initial information lead official to believe the incident involved kayakers, it was later confirmed that the accident involved the small powerboat.
