Serious Injury Motor Vehicle Accident

On Sunday, June 26, 2016 at approximately 1448 hours, Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police-Troop A barracks responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on the Spaulding Turnpike in the City of Rochester, NH.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1991 Saab 900SE, being driven by Lee Norton, age 62, of Rollinsford, NH, and another vehicle described as a tan Chevy pickup truck bearing NH license plates and towing a trailer with 2-3 four wheelers on it were traveling southbound on the Spaulding Turnpike in the city of Rochester. An independent witness reported that the operators of these two vehicles were engaged in a “road rage” type incident and were being operated in an “antagonizing” manner. As the vehicles approached the area of exit #12, Norton lost control of his vehicle. The Saab struck the guardrail on the left side of the roadway and careened across the highway, striking a 2015 Subaru Impreza being driven by Jeffrey Cahill, age 25, of Waltham, MA. The operator of the unknown Chevy pickup left the scene. The Saab and Chevy pickup did not make contact. Cahill was not injured in this accident. Norton sustained serious head injuries and was treated at the scene by members of the Rochester Fire Department. He was transported to the Skyhaven Airport where he was transferred to the Maine Medical Center via medical helicopter.

All aspects of this accident, including the actions of all drivers prior to the collision, the identification of the operator and vehicle that left the scene, and causation, are currently under investigation.

The right two travel lanes were closed for approximately 20 minutes as Troopers conducted their investigation.

Assisting the New Hampshire State Police at the scene were the Rochester Police Department, the Rochester Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. This accident remains under investigation by Trooper Jordan Kopko. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident is asked to contact Trooper Kopko, NH State Police-Troop A at (603) 223-8490.
