Boating Accident, Piscataqua River, Newington

While travelling under the General Sullivan Bridge, boat operator William Griffin, age 49, of N. Berwick Maine, reportedly struck a submerged hazard causing both he and his passenger to be ejected from the boat.

Mr. Griffin and his 12 year old son Owen began to scream for help as the boat circled a short distance away. A nearby good Samaritan recovered them from the water and transported them to Great Bay Marine where they were met by the Newington Fire/Rescue. Both Griffins were transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.

William Griffin was treated for a laceration to the arm with Owen only receiving minor abrasions.

The boat being operated by Mr. Griffin was a 2016, 17" May Craft equipped with a 40 horsepower outboard motor. US Coast Guard stood by the unoccupied, circling vessel, until it ran out of gas. It was towed back to the launch and removed by the owner.
