On Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 4:03 PM, the NH State Police, Troop F received a report from the Coos County Jail that an inmate had escaped from their facility by forcing his way out a window. The inmate was identified as Nicholas Dowland, age 18, Berlin, NH.

Troopers from NH State Police-Troop F and a State Police K-9 team from Troop E along with Chief Leblanc of the Pittsburg Police Department and members of the United States Border Patrol converged on the area in an attempt to search for Downland. At around 6:05 PM, Downland was spotted walking along the Northern Rail Trail and was taken into custody without incident. Downland was transported back to the Coos County House of Corrections and will be required to appear before the 1st Circuit-District Division-Lancaster Court on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 to answer to the charge of Escape. Downland was held without bail on $50,000 cash after that hearing. There is an on-going investigation into a residential burglary in the area that may be connected to the escape. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Trooper Nathan Sleight at 603-223-8798 or nathan.sleight@dos.nh.gov.
