Investigative Update – Trooper Ryan Hickey Struck by Vehicle

On May 22nd, 2016 at approximately 230 in the morning, Trooper Ryan Hickey was assisting another Trooper with a motor vehicle stop on the FE Everett Turnpike southbound in the immediate area of exit 10 in Merrimack. Trooper Hickey had secured three, (3) individuals in his cruiser for transport to the troop station following an arrest and was in the area of his driver's side door when he was struck on the left side of his body by a vehicle traveling southbound. The other Trooper on scene was able to identify the type of vehicle as an older, light colored SUV and radioed this information to our dispatch center. The Trooper then immediately began to render aid to Trooper Hickey as the suspect vehicle continued southbound on the turnpike. Trooper Hickey was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital.

The State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Unit were assigned to investigate the collision and have followed up on numerous leads. Within the first 24 hours of this case investigation, Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police have identified, located and taken possession of the vehicle involved in this collision and have developed a person of interest.

Trooper Hickey remains hospitalized at this time with non-life threatening injuries. Trooper Hickey is a one, (1) year veteran of the State Police and served as a police officer with the Derry, NH Police Department for 2 years prior to becoming a Trooper.

The New Hampshire State Police and Trooper Hickey want to thank our communities for the outpouring of support we have received over the past 30 hours. Between the emails, phone calls and comments on social media, the support from our communities has been exceptional. Over the past week, our collective thoughts have been with the men and women of the Manchester, NH Police Department as Officers Ryan Hardy and Matthew O'Connor recover from their injuries. Our thoughts are also with the Auburn, MA Police Department and the family of Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr. and members of the Massachusetts State Police after the incident in Oxford, Massachusetts yesterday.

As information in this sensitive investigation continues to develop, we would continue to ask that anyone with information about this incident contact the New Hampshire State Police at 603-223-4381 or email Trooper First Class Christopher Storm at We again thank everyone for their support to this point and as additional facts develop we will make them available to the media as soon as practical.
