Trooper Harold B. Johnson

1888 - 1948

Trooper Harold B. Johnson

Trooper Harold Johnson, 60, was born in North Stratford and also spent many years in Groveton where his parents owned the Eagle Hotel. He moved to Lancaster, New Hampshire in 1940, where he lived with his wife May, two daughters, and son.

Trooper Johnson was first employed by the Motor Vehicle Department in 1924. When this department merged with the new State Police Department in 1937, he became one of the first Troopers. In fact, Trooper Johnson also wore the No.1 Badge on the force, since he was the oldest in years and time on the New Hampshire State Police.

On October 11, 1948 Trooper Johnson was traveling from Groveton with Chief Malloy from Lancaster along with Trooper Helms. They were returning from a court hearing when their cruiser collided with a train. Both Trooper Johnson and Chief Malloy died in the crash. Trooper Johnson was a dedicated member of the State Police and embodied integrity and professionalism.
