Special Investigations Unit

Mission Statement
Dedicated to the pursuit of justice and to the safety and security of the citizens and visitors of the State of New Hampshire through partnerships, innovative investigatory techniques, and application of advanced computer forensic techniques in support of investigations

History - Located within the Investigative Services Bureau, the Special Investigations Unit was created in January of 2018, due to a recognized need for a dedicated group of highly specialized investigators to combat the rise of computer crimes and cyber threats, and to investigate other specialized crimes such as financial crimes, organized crime, human trafficking and fugitive apprehension.

Cyber - It has been recognized that computers, mobile devices, digital media, and social media are involved in almost all investigations in some form.   The Special Investigations Unit is comprised of a team of specialized, highly trained, and technically proficient investigators.  A core component of the Special Investigations Unit’s mission is the investigation of cyber and computer related crimes.  These investigatory responsibilities range from the investigation of complex network breaches, to the investigation of child exploitation over the internet, to providing timely computer related forensic analysis in support of major investigations.  The Special Investigations Unit frequently partners with and provides services to other units within the State Police and to our local, county, state, and federal partners.

Beyond Cyber - Beyond cyber and computer related crimes, the Special Investigations Unit also focuses on other specialized investigations including:

  • Human Trafficking
  • Organized Crime
  • Financial Crimes
  • Fugitive Apprehension

Additionally, the Special Investigations Unit works in collaboration with the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a multi-agency group of law enforcement officers who conduct proactive and reactive investigations into target predators seeking to exploit and victimize children through the use of computers and the Internet.
