COVID-19 UPDATE

*** The State Police Marine Patrol Unit is pleased to announce the passing of Governor Sununu’s Emergency Order #29 in response to the challenges presented to perspective boaters by the COVID 19 pandemic. This emergency order waives the proctored exam requirement for all persons who have previously taken the NH Online Boating Safety Course. This rule also applies to those wishing to complete the online course during New Hampshire’s current State of Emergency.***

THOSE PERSONS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE ONLINE COURSE AND PASSED THE END OF COURSE EXAM ARE NOW EXEMPT FROM THE PROCTORED EXAM REQUIREMENT. ALL PROCTORED EXAMS HAVE NOW BEEN CANCELLED AS THEY ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED. YOU WILL BE RECEIVING EMAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING A 120 DAY TEMPORARY CERTIFICATE THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO OPERATE YOUR BOAT LEGALLY UNTIL YOUR LIFETIME CARD ARRIVES IN THE MAIL. YOUR PERMANENT CARD WILL BE MAILED TO THE ADDRESS YOU PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF COURSE REGISTRATION. ONCE RECEIVED, YOUR PERMANENT CARD WILL NOT HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE AND WILL NOT REQUIRE RENEWAL.

IN THE MEANTIME, THE NH LAW REQUIRING ALL BOAT OPERATORS TO CARRY PROOF OF BOATING EDUCATION WHILE OPERATING A BOAT IN EXCESS OF 25 HORSEPOWER REMAINS IN FULL EFFECT.

Mandatory Boating Education

New Hampshire has a mandatory boating education law. Everyone 16 years of age and older who operates a motorboat over 25 horsepower on New Hampshire waters must have a boating education certificate.

New Hampshire accepts the following boating education certificates:

  1. A boating certificate issued by another State agency and NASBLA approved.
  2. A boating certificate issued by the US Power Squadron.
  3. A boating certificate issued by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
  4. An unexpired commercial boating license issued by the US Coast Guard.
  5. An unexpired commercial boating license issued by the State of New Hampshire.

If you wish to operate a motorboat on New Hampshire waters and you do not have any of the above certificates, please sign up for one of our classroom courses listed below. The State proctored examination is included with the classroom course and is given during the last hour of the class.

Boating Education Course Schedule and Registration

Due to the extension of the Governor's Stay at Home Executive Order and the closing of the majority of our classroom venues, we have extended the postponement of our boating education classes until further notice. Please continue to monitor this site for updates as they become available.

It is our intention to open all classes as soon as safety concerns for all persons involved in the certification process can be met. We ask you to monitor our website at www.boatingeducation.nh.gov where updates will be posted as soon as changes are announced.

Online Course

Complete the New Hampshire Online Course. Upon successful completion of the online course and online exam, your certificate card will be sent to the address you used at time of course registration.
