MARILYN M. GATES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Marilyn M. Gates Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006. The following is a little background as to how this scholarship was established.

Marilyn is the wife of Retired Sergeant Donald Gates. Don, Marilyn and another couple and their son were in Texas to attend a wedding. During their stay in Texas, their car was struck by a drunk driver on March 26, 2006. Marilyn survived the crash, but later died from her injuries in the hospital. Don, his daughter and his two sons wanted to do something in Marilyn’s memory that would be a benefit to others. They thought it would be fitting to establish a scholarship in the amount of $500.00. Don, who is a member of the New Hampshire State Police Benevolent Association, contacted the President about their plan to establish a scholarship in Marilyn’s memory. He thought it would be fitting that the recipient be the son or daughter of a New Hampshire State Police employee. It was decided that this scholarship would be awarded along with the State Police Memorial Scholarships—Gearty-Parker Scholarship Fund and Sergeant James S. Noyes Benevolent Scholarship. The Gates Family plans to award the Marilyn M. Gates Memorial Scholarship to an undergraduate student of a State Police employee in the amount of $500.00 on a yearly basis for as long as they are able to do so.
