Swiftwater Courses

Swiftwater Rescue Level I
Textbook: Rescue 3 International Swift Water Rescue Technician
Hours: 28
Description: Level I provides rescue personnel with the fundamentals needed to stay safe while working in or around swiftwater/flood environments. This 28 hour course is delivered in three blocks. Blocks are either 3 day or two nights and two days. Block one includes interactive lectures and dryland operations. Block two and three are spent on the river. Students gain knowledge in hydrology and river classifications, size-up, site control and scene management. Practical skills include self-rescue, swiftwater swimming and fundamentals of shore, boat and in-water rescues. Additionally, students are introduced to the basics of paddle boat handling and the fundamentals of rope rescue including mechanical advantage and anchor systems.
This course has been independently evaluated to meet the requirements of the NFPA 1006 Chapter 12 Swiftwater Rescue Level I.

Swiftwater Rescue Level II
Textbook: Rescue 3 International Swift Water Rescue Advanced
Hours: 28
Description: Level II rescue personnel with the knowledge and skills to safely effect a rescue of a victim in a swiftwater/flood rescue environment. This course builds upon prerequisite swiftwater and rope work to expand the students' capablility to size-up a scene and make the correct rescue decision based upon their current capabilities. This 28-hour course is delivered in three blocks. Blocks are either two afternoon/evening and one day or two evenings (1st block), one afternoon/evening and one day. Block one includes lectures followed by in water level 1 review, low-light swimming and rescue skill development. Block two introduces class III whitewater swimming and rescue skills followed by a low-light search and rescue exercise. Block three focuses on problem solving and advanced rope techniques utilized in the swiftwater/flood rescue.
This course has been independently evaluated to meet the requirements of NFPA 1006 Chapter 12 Swiftwater Rescue Level II and swiftwater needs for FEMA/NIMS swiftwater/flood rescue personnel credentialling.

Swiftwater/Flood Rescue Boat Operator
Textbook: Rescue 3 International Swiftwater/Flood Rescue Boat Operator

Description: The Swiftwater/Flood Rescue Boat Operator Course provides rescue personnel with the knowledge and skills to safely operate motorized rescue craft in swiftwater/flood rescue environments. This 23 hour course is delivered in three blocks. Blocks are either 3 days or two nights and two days. Block one includes interactive lectures on boat maintenance and Class I whitewater operations. Block two includes Class II & III whitewater operations and low-light operation. Block three continues to build on operator and bowman with advanced rescue skills through challenging scenarios.
This course exceeds NHPA 1006 Chapter 12 Swiftwater Rescue requirements and meets operator and bowman needs for FEMA/NIMS swiftwater/flood resue personnel credentialing.
Prerequisites: Swiftwater Rescue Level I
Boating education certificate as required by NH law
