Concord, NH - The NH Division of Motor Vehicles is kicking off a new program designed to help veterans obtain commercial driver licenses by making use of their military vehicle training and experience.
Troops to Trucks allows veterans trained in the operation of heavy vehicles to apply for a waiver of the commercial driver license skills (road) test and obtain a New Hampshire CDL by passing the written exam.
"The NH Army National Guard has several active transportation units that utilize heavy vehicles," said Richard C. Bailey, Jr., Director of Motor Vehicles. "Troops to Trucks will enable members of these units to put their military skills to work in civilian life."
Bailey said the program eliminates the need for CDL applicants to rent commercial vehicles for road tests, which can be a significant barrier.
To be eligible for the road test waiver, veterans:
Applicants must not have any alcohol-related or major driving offenses during the previous two years on both civilian and military licenses.
Service members or veterans can download a waiver application and take the completed form to any DMV location.
The Division of Motor Vehicles reserves the right to disqualify applicants based on information obtained during the application process.
