Denise [July 2006]

I recommend Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. Several members of our book group have had close friends or family go to Haiti on short missions trips, so there was already a connection with the Haiti aspect of the book. One person CAN make a difference that impacts the world. Paul Farmer's insights into how streamlining health care has culled the poor from obtaining necessary care are accurate, not just in Haiti, but globally. Here is how one man honors his Hippocratic Oath. Excellent!

Denise [Fall 2005]

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. She is so good at putting skin on ethical situations and telling all points of view equally.
My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok. The images in this story are powerful & lasting.
Your Blues Ain't Like Mine by Bebe Moore Campbell. She has fictionalized the story of Emmett Till & followed the surviving characters for about 40 years after.
Prince Edward by Dennis McFarland. Powerful story of P.E. County, Virginia's response to desegregation. Wonderful book.
