Employees at the Northern NH Correctional Facility Recognized with Special Awards


(Berlin, NH) The New Hampshire Department of Corrections recognized employees at the Northern NH Correctional Facility in Berlin with special awards during National Correctional Employees Appreciation Week. Corrections Commissioner William L. Wrenn presented a total of 14 medals and citation bars during a ceremony at the facility today.

Correctional Officers can receive up to five different medals and citation bars for an extraordinary achievement or accomplishment. Those include the Medal of Honor, the Life Saving citation bar, the Honorable Service citation bar, the Injury in the Line of Duty citation bar, and the Team Commendation citation bar. Non-uniformed employees can receive a special Department token for their devotion to duty and service to the public. The following employees were recognized for their achievements during 2016 and early 2017.

Corrections Lieutenant Shanon Berwick, Corrections Corporal Richard Gauthier and Corrections Officers Scott Watson, Nancy Murphy, and David Lamontagne received the Team Commendation citation bar for subduing an inmate who had attacked and assaulted a fellow employee on August 30, 2016. Corrections Officer Ronald Heinemann received the Honorable Service citation bar for the same incident by placing himself between the inmate and the injured employee. Corrections Officer David Burdick received the Injured in the Line of Duty citation bar for the same incident. Registered Nurse Misty Gagne received a special devotion to duty token for providing medical assistance for the injured employee.

Corrections Lieutenant Edward McFarland, Corrections Sergeant Yair Balderrama, and Corrections Officer Nathan King received the Life Saving citation bar for preventing a hanging in one of the facility’s housing units on September 1, 2016.

Corrections Corporal Jeffrey Chapman and Corrections Officer George Bigl received the Life Saving citation bar for providing abdominal thrusts to an inmate who was choking and unable to breathe in the dining hall on March 31, 2017.

Corrections Officer Diana Beckwith received the Department of Corrections Honorable Service citation bar for providing emergency care while off-duty to a 9 year old boy who had collapsed on the Hillside School playground on May 18, 2016. Her actions saved his life.
