Department of Corrections Honors Employees at NH State Prison and Secure Psychiatric Unit

(Concord, NH) A total of 45 medals and citation bars were awarded to employees at the New Hampshire State Prison for Men and the Secure Psychiatric Unit/Residential Treatment Unit in Concord during National Corrections Employees Appreciation Week ceremonies in Concord on May 3, 2016. The ceremonies are being held all week to draw attention to these employees’ extraordinary accomplishments.

Corrections Commissioner William L. Wrenn presented the Department’s highest award to one Corrections Officer who intervened to prevent an inmate from grabbing his partner’s gun during a transportation detail to Concord Hospital in May 2015. Corrections Officer Gerard Williams is only the ninth recipient of this medal since the Department of Corrections was established in 1983. Had the inmate been successful the two officers and other members of the public could have been injured or worse.

Other uniformed and non-uniformed employees were also recognized for a variety of actions including the prevention of inmate suicide attempts and assisting inmates and co-workers in medical distress. Two Officers are recognized for their off-duty service to public. One officer assisted a car accident victim and another officer rescued a family pet from a burning home.

More medals and bars will be awarded later this week at the NH Correctional Facility for Women in Goffstown and the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility in Berlin. The following recipients were recognized in Concord.
