Kevin Fifekevin fife
Stone Wall Building

Kevin Fife specializes in the traditional art of dry stack stonewalls, which are made without the use of mortar to hold them together. Fife has extensive experience in restoring historic field stone walls, as well as building new ones in the traditional style. He is also skilled in splitting and laying up granite foundations, walls, steps, and does repointing of mortar foundations. Fife grew up in the township of Canterbury, NH and has taught dry laid stonewall workshops at the Canterbury Shaker Village, Fells Estate in Newbury, NH and Sanborn Mills in Loudon, NH. Kevin represented New Hampshire at the 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and at the expanded recreation held in 2000 in Hopkinton.

Preferred activities and age groups: Demonstrations and hands-on workshops at community locations such as historic societies, fairs, festivals, and museums. Because of the nature of the tradition, presentations and workshops are more practically held outdoors. Interested in working with adults.

Arnold M. Graton, Jrarnold graton jr
Historic Restoration Timber Framing

Arnold Graton, JR (known as “JR”) specializes in historic restoration timber framing. JR Graton comes from a long family tradition of shoring, rigging, timber framing and especially covered wooden bridge restoration. Over the last fifty years, three generations of the Graton family of Ashland, New Hampshire have been restoring covered bridges and other historic structures in New England and other parts of the country including California, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Graton is interested in promoting the importance of preserving historic buildings, barns and bridges and helping people to better understand historic timber framing techniques. Graton can also offer a slide/power point presentation on the history of the Graton family’s involvement with covered bridges.

Preferred activities and age groups: Demonstrations and talks at historical societies, fairs, festivals, and museums throughout New Hampshire. Interested in working with adults.

David Kennarddavid kennard
Working Border Collies & Sheep Herding

David Kennard trains and works with border collies, primarily in raising sheep. His presentations showcase the traditional skills of training border collies and methods of raising and working sheep. He believes is it important for people living in urban environments to learn more about the tradition of sheep farming, an important part of New Hampshire’s agricultural heritage. Demonstrations are educational and interactive. Typically, a full demonstration involves four to six border collies and six to eight sheep. An enclosed area of a minimum size of 100’ x 150’ (150’ x 150’ preferred) is required for a demonstration and if one is not available, Dave can set up fencing in an open field for an additional fee. Kennard can also provide a PA system, water, panels and a tent if necessary. Demonstrations last 45 minutes to 1 hour with a minimum half hour break and a maximum of four demonstrations in a day.

Preferred activities and age groups: Demonstrations held outdoors at fairs, festivals, and museum settings. Interested in working with school aged children 6th grade through high school, college students, adults and the elderly.
Fees: Fee established on a case by case basis, dependent upon the number of demonstrations requested, mileage, etc.
