New Castle – Rye Public Informational Meeting
NH Route 1B Bridge Over Little Harbor

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation will hold a Public Informational Meeting on Thursday, May 4, 2017 to provide a status update on the New Castle - Rye Bridge on NH Route 1B over Little Harbor. The May 4th meeting will be held at The Common (Recreation Center), 301 Wentworth Road (Route 1B) in New Castle, New Hampshire. The formal presentation will begin at 7:00 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm for the viewing of the plans.

At the public meeting, the design team will review the status of the project and present a preliminary design concept for a fixed bridge rather than a bridge that lifts for vessels. Coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office on the project is ongoing. The public is invited to identify concerns that should be addressed through the Section 106, National Historic Preservation Act review process.

The New Castle - Rye Bridge, also known as the Wentworth Bridge, is on Route 1B over Little Harbor, next to the Wentworth by the Sea Marina and Wentworth by the Sea Golf Course, and connects the communities of New Castle and Rye. The bridge was designed in 1941 and constructed in 1942 as part of the defense of Portsmouth Harbor during World War II. The current bridge replaced a wooden bridge and consists of a steel grated deck that lifts, though it is raised less than a dozen times a year.

The bridge underwent major rehabilitation in 1975 and 2009. In 2011, an in-depth bridge inspection indicated serious deterioration and prompted the NHDOT to reduce allowable weight limits that can cross the bridge to 15 Tons.
