Seasonal Welcome and Information Centers to Reopen for Winter Months

Concord NH, November 12, 2015 – The state's three seasonal Welcome and Information Centers (WIC) will reopen for the winter season under a pilot project between the New Hampshire Department of Economic Development's (DRED) Bureau of Visitor Services (BVS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). Under the pilot, Colebrook, Lebanon, and Littleton WIC's will reopen from mid-December until late-March.

"The winter season is a very important time for our tourism industry. Last year more than 7 million people visited the state during the winter months, spending more than $1.1 billion," said DRED Commissioner Jeff Rose. "The gateway location of these facilities provides us the opportunity to welcome visitors to the state. While this is a pilot for this winter, the agency will be collecting information and assessing the needs of the traveling public for the winter months."

"Interstates 93 and 89 as well as US Route 3 are major entry points in the northern and western parts of New Hampshire," said NHDOT Commissioner Victoria Sheehan. "Through the cooperative efforts of DRED and the DOT, motorists will have more options this winter for taking a break during their travels."

The seasonal WIC's have been closed during the winter months since 2011. However, based on the recently signed state budget and enhanced agency operating efficiencies, funds were allocated to support expanding winter operations at the state's three seasonal WIC's. Having the facilities open during the winter season expands the state's services and marketing opportunities. The three sites will be open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Thursday through Monday from December 17th until March 21st.

The Division of Travel and Tourism Development, as part of the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development, works with the state's seven travel regions to increase visitation, travel and visitor expenditures in order to expand business activity and employment throughout the state. The division is responsible for domestic and international advertising and public relations, literature publication and distribution, administration, grant administration and research to monitor and measure the impact of travel and tourism to the state.
