Road Closure and Detours for Six Months

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces the planned closure of a segment of NH Routes 123/124 in New Ipswich on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 to allow for the replacement of the bridge over the Souhegan River known as Highbridge. The rain date for this closure is Thursday, April 16.

This closure to through traffic will be in effect for approximately six months. During the closure (4/15 thru 10/16/15), a signed detour will be in place for the travelling public to utilize the following routes:

  • NH Route 123 (between NH 124 in New Ipswich and NH 101 in Peterborough)
  • NH Route 101 (between Peterborough and Temple)
  • NH Route 45 (between NH 101 in Temple and NH 123 in Greenville)
  • NH Route 123 (between Greenville and New Ipswich

This project includes the replacement of the existing "Red List" steel girder bridge with a new single span steel girder bridge located in its present location. Like its predecessor, the new bridge will also span the historic stone arch bridge built in 1820.

Other work associated with the bridge replacement project includes reconstruction of the NH Routes 123/124 (Turnpike Road) approaches to the bridge; intersection improvements to NH 123 (Highbridge Road); roadway and drainage upgrades to Mill Street, Ypya Road, Ypya Drive, and the River Road approach to NH 123/124.

A gated temporary bridge connecting Mill Street to Ypya Road is currently in place and will be utilized by emergency responders, school busses and authorized personnel only. No unauthorized vehicles will be allowed at any time during the detour.

Beck and Bellucci, Inc. of Franklin, New Hampshire is the prime contractor for the $3.5 million project, which has a final completion date of June 17, 2016.
